McCauley & Son recreate an Evinrude 75 hp racing motor

Hans and I are restoring a 2nd 1975 75 hp racing motor, this time an Evinrude. Photos show the motor ‘under construction’. Di Johnson found the powerhead and cowl on a longshaft motor for us in Dec. 2010 at a storage lot auction in Crosby. Then I bought the shortshaft exhaust housing and gearcase Nov. 2011 at the Rothermel meet. We installed ‘new’ 1975 high ring pistons from my old stock of parts, and filed down .020″ oversized rings to get the right ring gap. The swivel bracket bushing was worn enough that the motor wobbled very slightly so the bushing and seals were replaced, now it’s as if the motor has solid mounts. The gearcase has also been completely rebuilt. This will be a candidate for the Jan 2013 Houston Boat show, the colors and decals will  be as shown in the attached photo below from 1983. Also check out my son Hans running the May Fly III 67-68 mph in Feb. It’s been less than a year since that rig was restored.
