Lake Catherine Wet Meet May 2013

Hot Flash from Hot Springs, AR!   May 16 – 19.  See the photo gallery at: http://www.texaschapteraomci.com/gallery/lake-catherine-may-2013 . The meet started on Thursday and it rained all day. But…Friday was a good day and also was Saturday! The Texas members showed up on Thursday. The Arkansas members arrived  on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.  Friday morning we made a nice run up to the dam and back.

Dennis and his lovely wife Sharon Schmidt ‘s Glen-L Squirt was the Peoples’ Choice feature boat of the meet.  After some tweaking with the motor, all went well and we had a good time.

Chip Rathbun’s Fat Fifty was running bad with the Gale 60 cylinder heads, so he decided to change back to the stock heads. The motor ran much better with the stock heads.

Carl Fryer and his son brought their boats including his Arkansas Traveler. Carl’s son’s 1957 Johnson 35 konked out on the lake and got towed back to the dock. He pulled the flywheel to do some trouble shooting. Ace mechanic Chip Rathbun discovered that the flywheel key had sheared. The key was replaced and he was back in business in short order.

Dave and Becky Samstag took their final run in their Checkmate, as they are transferring ownership to their son.

Carl Fryer ran his Arkansas Traveler with a beautifully restored Johnson Javelin 35.

John and Cindy Slator took charge of the meet activities and we had a nice dinner at a Mexican Restaurant in Hot Springs on Friday night. Don Johnston attended the meet and joined Chip for a ride in the Corson. Don really enjoyed the ride and said he was inspired to get back and start work on his motors. That’s what we need – more inspired members!  Tim Dugan from Keller, TX showed up with his aluminum Lone Star and ran several motors he had worked on.

Doug Samstag’s daughter Kara taking a spin with Dennis in his Glen L Squirt after the tear down of the magneto to tighten it up so it would not move under way – a success for sure!

Mark Lindhorst brought his Glasspar rig with a Mercury 115hp. Chad Kitchens arrived on Friday afternoon and visited with the club for awhile, but couldn’t  come back as he had to work.

Several members went to a music festival on Saturday night. The meet broke camp on Sunday morning.

Event coverage and photos contributed by Chip Rathbun along with more photos from Dennis Schmidt.

Be sure and make reservations for next year; May 14-18, 2014.
